During this period Tokyo’s real estate alone was estimated to be worth as much as half of the United States, and Japanese technology and business looked certain to rule the world for the foreseeable future, resulting in a series of anxious Hollywood films (Black Rain, Rising Sun, Karate Kid III) and books about how to do business the Japanese way. I returned to Japan for the first time as an adult in 2013 to witness a postmodern landscape in stasis - the same place that had once signified the future, was now symbolic of a failed past, or a ‘retro future’. I return to Japan as often as I can with the old family cameras, a Konica Z-up 80RC and a Fujifilm Super Date and collect expired Konica film (the corporation was one of the victims of the asset price crash during Japan’s subsequent ‘lost decades’). The camera date functions began in 1988 and won’t set beyond 2019. Or quirky phone boxes that have been painted pink and turned into mini pop-up libraries. For ten years I’ve been documenting the fall of the KX100, relics of Margaret Thatcher’s 1980s privatisation of most state-owned services used by the working classes, which included British Rail, British Gas, The Royal Mail and, of course, British Telecom. Because the KX100s are so unloved, their lighting has barely changed, and the dim, diffuse glow they gently emit appears as though it has bottled up the atmospheric ambience of stadium lighting at an FA Cup final in 1993, or a concrete underpass in 1987, or an old fashioned living room in 1975…moody, retro light. The only thing close to the feeling of being inside a KX100 is the (far more treacherous…) lift of an unloved council estate. BT stopped manufacturing the KX100 in 2001, when there were nearly 140’000 of these low-fi time machines in Britain. Now there are fewer than 40’000, and their disappearance is exponential. Who cares? Not me, particularly, but located in all their banality are pimp cards, political statements, racist graffiti, poems, traces of homelessness and addiction that provide a protrait of a nation with its knickers down. In 2021, award-winning poet Roger Robinson and acclaimed photographer Johny Pitts rented a red Mini Cooper and decided to follow the coast clockwise in search of an answer to this question. Leaving London, they followed the River Thames east towards Tilbury, where the Empire Windrush docked in 1948. Too often, that is where the history told about Black Britain begins and ends – but Robinson and Pitts continued out of London, following the coast clockwise through Margate to Land’s End, Bristol to Blackpool, Glasgow to John O’Groats and Scarborough to Southend on Sea. Here, the authors found not only Black British culture long overlooked in official narratives of Britain, but also the history of Empire and transatlantic slavery to which every Briton is tethered. The young woman throwing the crates out said I could take them. Because I was so busy piecing the final touches of my book together, it wasn’t until three months later that I got around to looking at the slides, and was amazed by what I saw. Here was an archive of beautiful full colour photographs documenting the city of Marseille from 1969 to 1990. Aside from the surprisingly skilled technical elements, what most amazed me was their link to my own work at the time, a document of one of Europe’s most multicultural cities on full display. West African, North African and working class white kids depicted on outings in the surrounding areas; mountain walks, football tournaments, and street carnivals, and showing Le Panier as it used to be; poor but with a strong community built from centuries of immigration. As soon as I saw the quality of the photographs I raced back to the place I found them, but the woman, along the store she worked at, had closed down. The only indication I have of who took the images, is an old Algerian man who runs a small convenience store, and recognised some of the faces in the pictures. Many are no longer with us, but some, he said, still live in Le Panier. As we looked at the photographs together an amazing amount of local knowledge and gossip emerged, and my plan is to ‘activate’ the images by getting the local community to write down notes in response
